What Is The Best Way to Clean Plastic Venetian Blinds?

Wondering what is the best way to clean plastic Venetian blinds?

Follow this really easy guide to get those grubby looking Venetian blinds back to that just bought condition!

You will need a fairly good day to do this job, so spring or summer time are perfect!

Step One

First of all make sure your blinds are in the closed position.

Then remove your Venetian blinds and lay them on a flat surface, you may have to put a tarpaulin sheet down if you have no hard surface in your garden.

I went ahead and laid them on the decking.

Step Two

Using a hose pipe or a watering can gently wet the blinds. This will help soak in and loosen the grime.

Then using a multi-surface cleaner, spray the entire blind and leave to soak for a five minutes.

Step 3

Take a soft bristled brush and gently clean the slat’s of the blind.

Follow each slat from side to side, this will ensure that you don’t damage the blind

Then rinse thoroughly with your hose pipe or watering can.

Step 4

Next turn the blind over and repeat the same process.

Wetting first with water and waiting 5 mins, then spraying with the multi-surface cleaner.

Gently cleaning again with a side to side action using the soft bristled brush and then finally rinsing.

Step 5

Now we need to repeat the whole process again for both sides but the difference is that the slats now have to be tilted fully the other way.

This will ensure that ALL the surface area of each slat will get completely cleaned and nothing missed.

Step 6

Once your happy all the dirt has been washed away.

Move over to your shed or fence and affix a couple of temporary screws.

These screws will allow you to hang the Venetian blinds so they can drip dry

Once again give them a rinse with the hose pipe, making sure you tilt the slats either way to make sure no dirt or cleaner is left behind.

Adjust the slats so air can pass through to allow them to dry.

After twenty minutes has passed, tilt the slats the opposite way.

This will make sure they dry completely and also stop any watermarks being left once dry.

Step 7

Using WD40 spray, squirt a small amount on any moving parts to help drive out any left over moisture, and to lubricate the mechanism.

The mechanism found in a Venetian blind is mostly made up of plastic, stainless steel and brass, which are not prone to rusting, but it’s better to be safer than sorry.

Now you know what is the best way to clean plastic Venetian blinds, you can now go ahead and get yours looking brand new again! 😉

How Often Should You Clean Venetian blinds?

Venetian blinds are one of those items in your house that can be overlooked until it’s too late and a family member or friend will noticeably point out how dirty they are…Embarrassing! To say the least.

I reccomend this type of deep clean to be done at least once or twice a year.

I would definitely add it to your once a year spring cleaning regime, and also towards the end of the year, maybe early autumn.

How Do You Keep Venetian Blinds Dust Free?

The best way i find to keep the Venetian blinds dust free is to dust them once a week.

Our dusting day is always a Saturday morning, this is the day we clean the house from top to bottom, so it’s easier to add dusting the Venetian blinds to this day.

I wouldn’t bother dusting them everyday, that becomes too much of a chore.

Instead (like I said) once a week will keep them pretty much dust free (well enough so the peering eyes can’t see).

I wouldn’t spray any fancy polish on them that has (the so-called) anti static properties to repel dust technology (whatever).

In the long run, eventually you will end up with just a build up of dirty looking polish film instead.

And that just makes that deep clean that much harder and longer to do, when it comes around.

How Do You Clean Dust Off Blinds?

We use a special duster that looks kinda weird.

This duster just slides between the slats, and using a side to side action, dusts them pretty easy.

The duster can be found at any local DIY shop or small hardware stores, Amazon also stock the triple Venetian blind duster, and is a godsend 😉

Did This Post Help?

Hopefully you now know what is the best way to clean plastic Venetian blinds (in my opinion).

It isn’t a hard task to do, just overlooked.

Like I said, keep to once or twice a year for a deep clean, invest in a Venetian blind duster and avoid any silly polishes.
